What is photophobia?

Photophobia is a condition that causes extreme light sensitivity, leading to discomfort or actual physical pain when exposed to bright light. It is commonly associated with migraines, dry eyes, and post-surgery recovery.

Do transition (photochromic) lenses work indoors?

Standard photochromic lenses — often called "transition" lenses — are designed to react to UV light. Ordinary indoor lighting doesn't produce enough UV to activate them, so they typically stay clear once you're inside. This is fine for most people, but if you're sensitive to bright indoor lighting — fluorescent overheads, harsh LED spotlights — photochromic lenses generally won't darken in response to ordinary indoor lighting.

Most standard photochromics also don't darken noticeably behind a car windscreen, since modern windscreens block much of the UV they rely on. Some newer photochromic variants are designed to activate in cars, but this remains a limitation of the technology overall.

Electrochromic lenses like WaSun's work differently. Instead of reacting to UV, they respond to a small electrical signal from a control on the frame, so tint is on demand. You decide when to tint — indoors, outdoors, in the car, whenever you want.

Regular sunglasses reduce brightness. They're designed for outdoor daytime use with a fixed tint.

Glasses for light sensitivity often need to work in changing conditions, indoors as well as out, and let you have clear vision when you want it. Someone with photophobia might need tint in a busy supermarket at midday and no tint five minutes later at home.

The mismatch is why many people with light sensitivity end up switching between multiple pairs of glasses throughout the day — one prescription pair for reading, one prescription sunglass pair for going out, sometimes a fixed-tint indoor pair too. That can be inconvenient and may mean owning multiple pairs.

How the tint is triggered

Photochromic lenses depend on UV to darken, which means they respond to your environment rather than to you. Electrochromic lenses respond to a control on the frame, so you choose when tint is active.

Indoor performance

Because most indoor lighting doesn't emit enough UV, photochromic lenses typically stay clear inside. If your sensitivity is triggered by fluorescents or bright LEDs, on-demand tint control is more useful.

Prescription compatibility

What are FL-41 lenses, and how does electrochromic tint compare?

FL-41 is a rose-tinted lens filter designed to reduce certain blue-green wavelengths. It has been studied for light sensitivity, including in people with migraine and some other conditions, although individual responses vary.

The main practical difference between FL-41 and electrochromic lenses is control:

  • FL-41 lenses have a fixed tint. The filter is always on, which suits people who want the same tint constantly, but limits flexibility if your needs change through the day.
  • Electrochromic lenses have on-demand tint. You choose when the tint is active.

Neither approach is universally better — they suit different people and different situations. Some people wear FL-41 lenses in specific settings and switch to different eyewear otherwise. If you're unsure what would be right for you, this is a good conversation to have with an optometrist.
