WaSun vs Chamelo Aura Rx vs Ampere Dusk Rx

An honest, side-by-side look at the three main electronic prescription eyewear brands in 2026 — written by one of them.

The short version

These three products are often lumped together, but they are not the same thing. The headline difference is the lens technology — WaSun uses genuine electrochromic chemistry, while Chamelo Aura Rx and Ampere Dusk Rx use electrically-controlled liquid-crystal (LCD) shutter films in front of the prescription lens.

The practical consequence: WaSun is designed to go fully clear indoors and act as everyday prescription glasses that tint on demand. Chamelo Aura Rx and Ampere Dusk Rx are electronic prescription sunglasses — their lightest state transmits around 63% of light, so they are not fully clear indoors.

Chamelo wins on switching speed (an LCD snaps in ~0.1 seconds). Ampere wins on simplicity and current availability of some sunglasses variants. WaSun is for the person who wants a single everyday clear pair that becomes sunglasses when they want it to.

We are WaSun. We've tried to be fair to Chamelo and Ampere in the specifics below. Spec figures are drawn from each brand's own public marketing at time of writing and may change — check their sites for live numbers.

The one difference that matters most

Electrochromic lens vs LCD shutter film — and why it changes everything

Electrochromic (WaSun)

The lens itself changes transmittance through an electrochemical reaction. There is no separate film in front of your prescription.

  • ✓ Fades like a dimmer — no sudden flick
  • ✓ Goes genuinely clear indoors
  • ✓ No LCD grid pattern, no rainbow polarisation artefacts
  • ✓ Only draws power during the transition

Trade-off: ~5 second fade, not instant.

LCD shutter (Chamelo, Ampere)

A separate liquid-crystal film sits in front of the prescription lens and switches between two polarisation states.

  • ✓ Snap transition — roughly 0.1 seconds
  • ✓ Simpler, more mature manufacturing
  • ! Minimum transmission around 63% — not fully clear
  • ! Polarised layer can interact with phone/car screens

Trade-off: positioned as adjustable sunglasses, not everyday glasses.

The 63% rule

What "clear indoors" actually means

Chamelo Aura Rx and Ampere Dusk Rx are electronic prescription sunglasses. In their lightest state they let through about 63% of visible light. That is darker than ordinary clear glasses (which let through ~90%+) and noticeably tinted indoors.

WaSun is engineered the other way around: fully clear is the default state. The electrochromic layer is transparent when off and tints on demand. That is the point — one pair you wear all day, instead of switching between a clear pair and a sunglasses pair.

Visible-light transmission (lightest state)
WaSun (clear)~90%+
Chamelo Aura Rx~63%
Ampere Dusk Rx~60-65%

Which one to actually buy

Honest answer: it depends what you're replacing.

Choose WaSun if…

You want one pair for everything

  • You currently carry two prescription pairs (clear + sunglasses) and are tired of it.
  • You spend most of your day indoors but need tint for driving, migraines or stepping out.
  • You want fully clear vision indoors with no permanent tint.
  • You are outside the US and want international shipping.
Choose Chamelo Aura Rx if…

You need instant and are OK with sunglasses

  • You already have a clear prescription pair and want prescription sunglasses that can go lighter.
  • The 0.1-second snap transition genuinely matters for your use case.
  • You want colour choice between tint shades.
  • You are in the US and want something order-ready today.
Choose Ampere Dusk Rx if…

You want simple, outdoor-first sunglasses

  • You mostly use electronic eyewear outside and value automatic + manual tint modes.
  • Your prescription is single-vision, within roughly ±7.00 SPH.
  • You prefer the Ampere frame style and are comfortable checking live availability directly on their site.

Common questions

Is WaSun just a rebrand of a Chinese smart glasses company?

No. WaSun is a UK-based startup founded by graduates of Imperial College London and KAUST. It is not affiliated with Guangzhou SEASUN Glasses Co., any Chinese OEM, or any other brand sharing part of the name. WaSun has no audio, no camera, and no AI — it is purely adaptive tinting.

Why would I accept a 5-second transition when Chamelo switches in 0.1 seconds?

Because the 5-second fade is the price of being fully clear indoors. An LCD shutter switches fast because it is physically a two-state film — it is always in your line of sight. Electrochromic chemistry changes the lens itself, so the "off" state is actually clear. If you want everyday glasses that occasionally tint, the fade matters less than the clarity. If you want sunglasses that occasionally lighten, the opposite is true.

Are Chamelo and Ampere basically the same product?

They are the same category — electronically-controlled LCD-shutter prescription sunglasses — but with different frame styles, product lines (Chamelo has audio variants in non-prescription models), and routes to market. Chamelo is more consumer-brand focused; Ampere leans more technical/outdoor. Specs for the Rx variants are broadly similar.

How does any of this compare to normal photochromic (Transitions) lenses?

Photochromic lenses (Essilor Transitions, Specsavers Reactions, etc.) are triggered by UV light — they darken outdoors in sunlight and clear up indoors over 2–5 minutes. They do not require batteries and work with any prescription, but they do not activate behind a car windscreen, do not activate indoors, and darken less in hot climates. We cover this in detail on our transition vs electrochromic page.
